The Thinker

About Us

the magazine, the legend, ... the inanity

This collection of well-known and not-so-well-known quotes pretty much sums up what we're all about. This is the story of

"Go sell crazy someplace else; we're all stocked up here"
(Brooks & Andrus, 1997).

"It depends on how you define alone" (Clinton, 1998).

"A journey of a thousand miles ... is a long frickin' ways"
(Krustofski, 2009).

"I can only speak to myself" (Bush, 2005).

"Even if there is only one possible unified theory, it is just a set of rules and equations. What is it that breathes fire into the equations and makes a universe for them to describe? Why does the universe go to all the bother of existing?" (Hawking, 1988).

"For NASA, space is still a high priority" (Quayle, 1990).

"Marriage is a long-term commitment — but a tattoo, that's for life" (Krustofski, 2008).

"I say tomato, you say cây cà chua" (Levinson & Markowitz, 1987).

"Those who fail to learn from redundancy are doomed to repeat it, again" (Emanuel, 2007).

And for no particular reason, here is one of the all-time granddaddies of movie quotes:

You can't handle the truth! Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lieutenant Weinberg? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom! You weep for Santiago and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives! You don't want the truth, because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall! You need me on that wall! We use words like "honor," "code," "loyalty." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line! I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it! I would rather you just said "Thank you," and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to! (Reiner, 1992).
